To understand what a computer is made up of in a simple way is understand the basic components.
1) The Monitor The monitor component is the screen in which is the eyes of the computer so you can see what is going on. This is what people use to view and operate the computer. This has got small in overall size in the past few years as technology has increased and now they are main flat screens ranging from on average 14 inch to 21 inch. There are smaller and large available.
2) The Keyboard The device which is used to type letters, numbers, words, command keys into the computer to instruct the computer what to do.
3) The Mouse The device which is used to control the mouse pointer which you can see via the monitor to instruct the computer what to do. This device is once of the most useful inventions made and saves lots of time and effort allowing a user to achieve results much quicker.
4) The Leads There are a few different leads all connection the computer, keyboard, mouse and monitor together and giving it power. They all have different shapes and sizes and must be plugged into the correct points on the main Processing Unit.
5) The Processing Unit This is the main part of the computer which has all the computer components in side all working together. Most people never need to open it up unless you are upgrading parts or components of the computer.
6) The Hard Disk The storage device which is inside of the computer Processing Unit. This will store files, folders, videos, picture, music, etc. Without opening the computer up the only way of knowing this is inside is the sound. When the computer is on sometimes you will hear the Hard Disk move when writing and reading. Also the light on some computers will flash on the front of the Processing Unit informing you that is alive and active. Hard Disks can also be external so you can store data as a backup an away from the internal drives.
7) The Memory RAM - Random Access Memory This is temporary space which is used by the computer when it is turned on to store instructions, programs and data which a user is using. What is stored on the RAM Memory is lost when the computer is turned off.
8) The CD-ROM / DVD This the device which you can insert media such as CD-Roms DVD's inside. The device hardware is a moveable part reading and writing to the media inserted. These drives can either be read or write or both (read/write).
9) The Floppy Drive These are less common on modern computer but they used to be standard as 1.44MB 3.5 inch disks or the old 1.2MB 5 and quarter inch drives. This media used to be the standard way of transporting data.
10) The Network Card This card is a piece of hard ware which allows you to connect to other computers either via the internet or other computers in a network in the same or external rooms. Network Cards either a stand 10/100 Mbps Speeds or Gigabit Speeds.
11) CPU - Central Processing Unit This the head of the computer the part which all the calculations and processing go through before the computer will work. This is like the brain of the computer and does all the calculations. These hard developed a lot of the last 10 years. From being Single Processing units to currently Duel Quad Core processing units in stand's. This means that they have got faster and faster.
12) The Motherboard This is the large part of processing board inside of the computer. This is what everything in the side of the main Processing Unit is connected to. This is like the head of the computer which everything connects to find out what to do by the CPU. These come in different size and have more or less parts on them depending on the make and model of the motherboard.
